Short description
D.A.R.Y.L. centers on a boy found wandering with no memory of his past beyond his first name. Taken in by a couple in Virginia while efforts are made to locate his family, he quickly shows abilities far beyond his years, excelling at baseball, absorbing knowledge at an extraordinary rate and mastering the piano almost instantly. What his new guardians do not know is that he was created as part of a secret government program and is not human at all. When the agency behind his creation decides the experiment has failed, the people who made him turn on him, and a handful of insiders help him get away.
Simon Wincer directed the film, the third of the thirteen features he has made, following Phar Lap and preceding The Lighthorsemen. Barret Oliver plays the title role, with Mary Beth Hurt and Michael McKean as the couple who shelter him, and Kathryn Walker and Josef Sommer among those connected to the program. The screenplay is credited to David Ambrose, Jeffrey Ellis and Allan Scott, and the film was produced by John Heyman for Paramount and World Film Services.
Released in June 1985, the film had a budget of about 10 million dollars and took in roughly 8 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.3 rating from around 15,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.4 from 379 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 4.3 from 18 reviews, well below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- This was the final role of Tucker McGuire (1913-1988), who played Mrs. Bergen.
- During a highway chase, Daryl and two police cars jump over a median barrier, but only Daryl's car survives the jump. It is not heavily damaged and continues driving in the opposite lane; its bumper is slightly dented, and the right headlight and one marker light are broken. However, in the very next scene, he is shown driving directly toward the camera, and the car is completely intact.
- When the film was released, moviegoers could go to the box office, decode the acronym "DARYL," and receive a gift—a small movie poster. "DARYL" stood for "Data Analyzing Robot Youth Lifeform".
- The scenes featuring computers at the military base were filmed in appropriate facilities at Epcot in Orlando, Florida, which is part of the Walt Disney World resort.
- While fleeing from the police, Daryl and the doctor switch places in the car. When the car spins around, it can be seen through the rear window that an adult is driving while the child is sitting in the passenger seat.
