Girls Just Want to Have Fun

Janey Glenn has just moved to a new city with her family, and she quickly befriends a classmate named Lynne Stone. The two share a love of dancing, especially for a local television show called Dance TV. When the program announces a contest to find new dancers, Janey and Lynne set out to audition as a pair. Janey's strict father disapproves of her interest in dancing and the show, which stands in the way of her plans. A wealthy rival named Natalie also competes for a place on the program, and she pursues the dancer Jeff, to whom Janey is drawn.

The 1985 American film was directed by Alan Metter and written by Amy Spies, with Chuck Russell producing. It stars Sarah Jessica Parker as Janey, Helen Hunt as Lynne, Shannen Doherty as Maggie, Lee Montgomery as Jeff, Morgan Woodward and Jonathan Silverman, among a credited cast of ninety. The production came from New World Pictures and runs eighty-seven minutes, mixing comedy, family, music and romance. It was Metter's first feature as director, followed chronologically by Back to School, Police Academy: Mission to Moscow and Passport to Paris.
