Ararat

Ararat centres on a film being made in Toronto about the Armenian genocide of 1915, and on the people whose lives are caught up in it. Among them are Ani, an art historian serving as a consultant on the production, and her son Raffi, who has returned from a shoot in Turkey carrying film cans. Stopped at customs, Raffi is questioned by an officer named David, and what begins as a routine inspection turns into a long examination of the two men's families and histories. Around this encounter the film gathers a director of Armenian descent, a painter working on a portrait of his mother, and a young woman trying to understand her father's death.

Atom Egoyan wrote and directed the film, which he also produced with Robert Lantos. It followed The Sweet Hereafter and Exotica in his filmography. The cast includes Charles Aznavour as the director Edward Saroyan, Simon Abkarian as Arshile Gorky, Christopher Plummer as David, Arsinée Khanjian as Ani, David Alpay as Raffi and Marie-Josée Croze as Celia, with 45 credited performers in all. The production was a Canadian and French co-production.
