Three young offenders in Los Angeles are offered a way out of prison: instead of serving time, they agree to work undercover for the police. Julie Barnes, Peter Cochran and Lincoln Hayes, whose backgrounds make them useful in the city's nightlife and drug trade, are recruited by Captain Adam Greer. When Greer is found dead, the three become suspects and set out to find out who was responsible.
The film is a 1999 feature directed by Scott Silver, who also wrote the screenplay with Stephen T. Kay and Kate Lanier. It was Silver's first film as director, produced by Tony Ludwig, Alan Riche and Ben Myron for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and it adapts the television series of the same name. Claire Danes plays Julie, Giovanni Ribisi plays Peter and Omar Epps plays Lincoln; Dennis Farina appears as Captain Greer, with Josh Brolin and Steve Harris among the cast.
The production had a budget of about 50 million dollars and took roughly 13 million dollars worldwide, a large shortfall. Audiences rate it 4.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 9,900 votes and 4.4 out of 10 on TMDB from about 140 votes. A critics' rating of 3.3 out of 10 from 63 reviews places it in line with those audience scores.
