North Face is a German-language drama set in the summer of 1936, when the north face of the Eiger remains the last great unclimbed challenge in the Alps and an open contest among European mountaineers. Two Bavarian climbers, Toni Kurz and Andreas Hinterstoisser, set out to make the first ascent, with a pair of Austrian rivals pressing them from behind. A journalist named Luise, once close to Toni, watches from the valley as the weather turns and the climb becomes a fight to survive.
Philipp Stölzl directed the film, his second feature after Baby, working from a screenplay he wrote with Chris Silber and Rupert Henning. Benno Fürmann and Florian Lukas play the two climbers, with Johanna Wokalek as Luise, and Simon Schwarz, Georg Friedrich and Ulrich Tukur in supporting roles. The production was a German, Austrian and Swiss co-operation.
Released in October 2008, the film took about 7 million dollars worldwide, a modest figure for a period mountain drama. On IMDb it holds a 7.0 rating from roughly 20,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.2 from 319 votes.
