The Vanishing

Jeff Harriman and his girlfriend Diane Shaver are driving through Washington state when they stop at a service station. Diane goes inside for a drink and never comes back. Three years later she is still missing, the police have moved on, and the friends who once helped search have given up. Jeff has not. He keeps putting up flyers and asking questions about what happened to her. Then a man named Barney Cousins contacts him, claiming to know Diane's fate, and offers Jeff a single chance to learn the truth on the condition that Jeff submit completely to him.

George Sluizer directed this American film, working from a screenplay by Todd Graff. It followed Utz in Sluizer's filmography and came after his 1988 film of the same title. Kiefer Sutherland plays Jeff, Jeff Bridges plays Barney, and Nancy Travis and Sandra Bullock appear as Rita Baker and Diane Shaver, with Park Overall and Lisa Eichhorn in supporting roles.

Released in February 1993, the film earned about 15 million dollars worldwide against its production and marketing costs. On IMDb it holds a 6.3 rating from roughly 30,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from a much smaller base of 583 votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 from 37 reviews places it slightly below both audience scores.
