Short description
The Kingdom is set in Denmark's most technologically advanced hospital, where medical staff and patients encounter a series of supernatural and inexplicable events. These occurrences include the appearance of a ghostly ambulance and the voice of a child emanating from an elevator shaft. While the facility represents the peak of scientific achievement, the personnel struggle with human failure, professional misconduct, and the unsettling presence of the paranormal.
Directed by Lars von Trier and Morten Arnfred, this production is the third of 17 films directed by von Trier, following Europa and preceding Breaking the Waves. It is the first in a series of films by Arnfred that includes The Kingdom II and Letters from Denmark. The ensemble cast features Ernst-Hugo Järegård, Kirsten Rolffes, Holger Juul Hansen, Søren Pilmark, Ghita Nørby, and Jens Okking, supported by 65 credited actors.

What's left behind the scenes
- The dishwashers in the first season had to be dubbed because the actors couldn't deliver their lines as the creators intended.
- The building that Dr. Stig Helger was observing through binoculars from the hospital roof was a Swedish nuclear power plant. Due to its proximity to Copenhagen, the plant frequently caused friction between the two countries until it was shut down in 2005.
- Ernst-Hugo Järregård did not have a driver's license, and he drove a car only once in his life – during the filming of this series.
