Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey
Short description
Bill and Ted return in this 1991 science fiction comedy, in which the two would-be rockers face a threat from the future. A villain named De Nomolos sends robot duplicates of the pair back through time to remove them and take their places. The scheme succeeds, leaving the real Bill and Ted in the afterlife, where they challenge the Grim Reaper to a series of contests for a chance to return to the living. Their band, Wild Stallyns, and the future that depends on it are at stake.
Peter Hewitt directed the film, the first in his filmography and the sequel to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. The script comes from Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson, while Scott Kroopf produced. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter star as Ted and Bill, supported by William Sadler as the Grim Reaper, Joss Ackland as De Nomolos, Pam Grier and George Carlin. Made for around 20 million dollars, it earned roughly 38 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.3 from about 85,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.3 from over 1,400. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 55 reviews places it close to those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- During filming, Keanu Reeves fell ill in his own trailer and was hospitalized with blood poisoning due to a wound on his hand.
- The voices of Bill and Ted when they wake up sound strange because the sound at the studio was played backwards, connected to a reverb, and a so-called sound coating was used (this option allows full control of volume in any part of a selected video or audio clip on the timeline with millisecond accuracy). After that, the resulting sound (already without the original voices) was played backwards again and remixed with the voices.
- Jimbo Jones in "The Simpsons" was created based on the character of Reeves in this film.
- A few months before the film's release, the distributor, Orion Pictures, was on the verge of bankruptcy and was quietly selling the rights to some films in the hope that it would help. Columbia Pictures considered acquiring the rights to this film for a time, but after some consideration, Orion Pictures decided not to part with these rights, hoping the film would be successful.
- The villain from the future is named "Dä Nomolos." This is the name of the screenwriter and producer, Ed Solomon, written backwards.
