Rhinestone

A country music star in New York, Jake Ferris, boasts publicly that she can turn anyone at all into a successful country singer. Her manager takes her up on it: if she can make a star out of a nobody, she is free of her club contract. She picks Nick Martinelli, a New York taxi driver, as her project, and sets about training him for a debut at a city country nightclub.

Dolly Parton plays Jake and Sylvester Stallone plays Nick, with Richard Farnsworth, Ron Leibman, Tim Thomerson and Steve Peck among the cast. Bob Clark directed, working from a screenplay by Stallone and Phil Alden Robinson; Marvin Worth and Howard Smith produced. The film arrived in the summer of 1984, between Clark's A Christmas Story and Porky's II: The Next Day and his later From the Hip, and it came with a budget of about 28 million dollars. It earned roughly 21 million dollars worldwide, so it did not recover its costs.

Reception was poor on all sides. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.1 out of 10 from around 8,600 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 4.8 out of 10 from about 128 votes. A critics' rating of 3.3 out of 10 from 16 reviews places it below even the modest audience scores. The production carried a large credited crew of 60 and 82 credited cast members.
