Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

In 1850s Oregon, a backwoods farmer named Adam Pontipee comes to town looking for a wife and quickly marries Milly, a young woman he has just met. He takes her to his remote mountain farm, where she discovers that he shares the cabin with his six younger brothers, all unmarried and unused to any kind of polite behavior. Milly sets out to teach the brothers some manners and to help them find wives of their own. Their attempts to court the local girls go badly, and the brothers eventually take the women away from the town without their consent.

Stanley Donen directed the film, his fourth feature in a career that would eventually include sixteen, following Singin' in the Rain and preceding Funny Face. The screenplay was written by Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett and Dorothy Kingsley, and Jack Cummings produced it for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Jane Powell and Howard Keel lead the cast as Milly and Adam, alongside Jeff Richards, Russ Tamblyn, Tommy Rall and Julie Newmar among sixty-nine credited performers. The film is a musical western comedy that turned a modest worldwide box office of about five million dollars into a lasting place in the Hollywood musical tradition.
