Life or Something Like It

Lanie Kerrigan is a Seattle television reporter whose life looks enviable: a successful career, a comfortable home, and a fiancé who plays professional baseball. While working on a light feature about a homeless man known for predicting sports results, she becomes the subject of his prediction instead. He tells her she has only a week left to live. She dismisses it at first, but when his other forecasts come true, she is forced to reconsider what she wants from the time she may have left, including her relationship with Pete, the cameraman she argues with constantly.

Stephen Herek directed the film, the tenth of the nineteen features he has made in chronological order, following Rock Star and preceding Man of the House. Dana Stevens and John Scott Shepherd wrote the screenplay, and Angelina Jolie plays Lanie, with Edward Burns as Pete, Tony Shalhoub as the prophet Jack, and Christian Kane as Cal Cooper.

Released in April 2002, the film cost about 40 million dollars and returned roughly 17 million worldwide, a poor result against its budget. Audiences are lukewarm on it: it holds 5.8/10 on IMDb from around 35,000 votes and 5.7/10 on TMDB. A film critics' rating of 4.7/10 from 120 reviews places professional opinion below even those modest audience scores.
