• Over 800 extras were involved in the filming.
• Sokurov conceived of the film as an attempt to absorb the 'flow of time' 'in one breath'. On the day of filming, the Winter Palace was closed to the public. The main difficulty was that any error with this filming technique could not be 'edited in' later. The idea was realized on the third attempt after seven months of rehearsals.
• The film's cinematographer, Tilman Büttner, had to walk 1.3 kilometers through the corridors of the Hermitage, carrying a stabilization system and a camera with a monitor and batteries weighing a total of 35 kg.
