The Hunt for Red October
Short description
The Soviet Union has launched a new nuclear submarine, the Red October, whose propulsion system makes it nearly impossible to detect. Its captain, Marko Ramius, sets course for the United States, and Moscow's naval and air forces are soon hunting him. American officials fear he intends to strike, but CIA analyst Jack Ryan suspects the captain means to defect instead, and he has little time to prove it.
The film adapts Tom Clancy's novel and was directed by John McTiernan, released in 1990 between Die Hard and Medicine Man in his filmography. Sean Connery plays Ramius, Alec Baldwin plays Jack Ryan, and Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, James Earl Jones and Joss Ackland appear among the credited cast of 60. Larry Ferguson and Donald Stewart wrote the screenplay, and Mace Neufeld produced.
Made for roughly 30 million dollars, it took about 201 million dollars worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 7.5 from over 210,000 votes, on TMDB 7.4 from a smaller pool, while a critics' rating of 7.7 from 76 reviews sits slightly above both audience scores. With a runtime of 135 minutes, it launched the screen series following Clancy's analyst.
What's left behind the scenes
- Almost all the Russians in the film are played by actors from different countries: Sean Connery is Scottish, Sam Neill is a New Zealander, Tim Curry is English, Stellan Skarsgård is Swedish, Sven-Ole Thorsen is Danish, and Ivan G'Vera is Czech.
- The teddy bear that Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) takes with him could be seen at the beginning of 'Die Hard.' Director John McTiernan thus contextually links the two films, inviting the audience to draw their own parallels.
- Daniel Davis plays the captain of the military vessel USS Enterprise. The spacecraft is also featured in the 1987 film "Star Trek: The Next Generation," in which Davis has a guest role.
- During filming, several actors playing crew members of the USS Dallas took a tour of a real submarine. To better prepare for the role of the USS Dallas commander, Scott Glenn took on the 'command' of a real submarine and gave orders to the actual crew members.
- Kevin Costner was initially chosen for the role of Jack Ryan, and Klaus Maria Brandauer for the role of Marko Ramius.
- The shot of the torpedo launch from the 'V.K. Konovalov' was used in the opening sequence of the 'Star Trek: Enterprise' episodes about the Mirror Universe.
- Apparently, $20,000 from the production budget was spent on Sean Connery's magnificent hair in this film, seemingly as a key plot detail.
