Sugar & Spice

Sugar & Spice follows Diane Weston, captain of the cheerleading squad at Lincoln High, and her four closest friends, known as the A-Squad. Diane falls for Jack, the school's star quarterback, and when she becomes pregnant the couple decide to marry, only to find that money is far harder to come by than they expected. With Jack unable to land steady work, Diane proposes a solution that takes the group well outside the usual range of cheerleading activities: robbing a bank. The squad sets about planning the job, and the scheme puts their friendship and their futures under pressure.

Francine McDougall directed the film, her first feature, followed by Go Figure and Cow Belles. Lona Williams wrote the screenplay, Wendy Finerman produced, and the cast includes Marley Shelton as Diane, Mena Suvari as Kansas Hill, Melissa George as Cleo Miller, Marla Sokoloff as Lisa Janusch, Rachel Blanchard as Hannah Wald and Alexandra Holden as Fern Rogers, among 45 credited cast and 93 credited crew.

Released in January 2001, the film had a budget of about 11 million dollars and took roughly 13 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from around 16,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 from far fewer, about 311. A critics' rating of 5.1 from 73 reviews places it below the audience scores.
