Rollie Tyler, formerly a maker of special effects for films, now designs electronic toys and lives in New York with his girlfriend Kim and her young son. Kim's ex-husband Mike, a police detective, asks Rollie to use his expertise to help stage a trap for a killer. The operation ends badly: both the suspect and Mike are shot dead. Mike's superior, Lieutenant Silak, presents the officer's death as the killer's doing, but Rollie knows someone else was in the room. With Silak apparently covering up what happened, Rollie turns to Leo McCarthy, the detective from the first film, now working as a private investigator. The two men look into the case Mike had been handling and find corruption reaching further than one officer.

F/X2 was directed by Richard Franklin, the eighth of the nine features listed for him to date, following Link, and written by Bill Condon. Bryan Brown and Brian Dennehy return as Rollie and Leo, with Rachel Ticotin as Kim, Joanna Gleason as an assistant district attorney, Philip Bosco as Silak and Kevin J. O'Connor as Matt Neely. It was produced by Dodi Fayed and Jack Wiener for Orion Pictures and released in April 1991.

Made for about 18 million dollars, the film returned around 21 million worldwide, a modest result against its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from roughly 13,000 votes and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from just over 300. A critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 16 reviews places it below the audience scores.
