Short description
Predator 2 moves the hunt from the jungle to Los Angeles, where a heavily armed city is already tearing itself apart. Lieutenant Mike Harrigan, a narcotics detective, is drawn into a string of gruesome killings that first look like the work of rival drug gangs. As the bodies pile up and the violence spreads, Harrigan comes to understand that the killer is not human at all: an alien hunter has chosen the city as its new hunting ground, and Harrigan himself becomes a target.
Stephen Hopkins directed the film, his second feature after A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child. Jim and John Thomas wrote the screenplay, and Joel Silver, Lawrence Gordon and John Davis produced it for 20th Century Fox with Davis Entertainment and Silver Pictures. Danny Glover leads the cast as Harrigan, alongside Gary Busey, Rubén Blades, María Conchita Alonso, Bill Paxton and Robert Davi.
Made for 35 million dollars, the film took in about 57 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 201,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.3, from about 4,000 votes. A critics' rating of 4.8 out of 10 from 119 reviews places it lower than those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Arnold Schwarzenegger planned to star in the film, but ultimately chose to work on 'Terminator 2' (1991).
- Elpidia Carrillo, who played Anna in "Predator" (1987), played one of the roles in the film. Her name is mentioned in the end credits, but she is very difficult to spot in the film. This is because the scene with her participation was cut from the film. In this scene, she talks about the events that took place in the South American jungles. Despite the scene being cut, Anna still appears on screen. Video footage of her can be seen on a monitor in Peter Keyes' (Gary Busey) mobile command post when he is explaining the Predator's self-destruct mechanism.
- The script underwent numerous changes. For example, initially it was supposed to be Case (Gary Busey), not Dutch, the character from Arnold Schwarzenegger's first film, who would be featured. But Arnold disliked the idea of the action taking place in the city and turned down the role.
- The sounds made by the Predator are a combination of sounds from cats, tigers, lions, and bears.
- Among the Predator's trophies, one can notice the skull of an Alien.
- The following scenes were cut from the film: 1) A storyline about Leona's pregnancy. 2) The scene where Danny Glover chases the Predator was much longer. 3) A massacre carried out by the Predator in the subway.
- Bill Paxton's characters were killed in the respective films 'Aliens', 'Predator 2', and 'Terminator'.
- One of the Predators gives Danny Glover's character a musket from 1715. According to the screenwriters, this was done to leave a clue for a sequel that would take place not in our time, but several centuries ago.
