Short description

The Devil's Rejects follows the Firefly family, a clan of killers introduced in Rob Zombie's earlier film, as they flee their rural home after a violent confrontation with the police. Mother Firefly is taken into custody, but Otis and Baby escape, eventually joining their father, Captain Spaulding, and seeking shelter with their uncle Charlie Altamont. Sheriff John Quincy Wydell, determined to avenge his brother's death, pursues them without regard for the law, willing to match their brutality. His manhunt closes in as the family leaves a trail of violence across the country.

Rob Zombie wrote and directed this 2005 crime horror film, his second feature after House of 1000 Corpses, with Michael Ohoven, Mike Elliott and Zombie producing. Sid Haig, Bill Moseley and Sheri Moon Zombie reprise their roles from the earlier film, while William Forsythe plays the sheriff and Ken Foree and Matthew McGrory appear among the cast. The production, made for roughly seven million dollars, earned about twenty-one million worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost.

Audiences rate the film 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 111,000 votes and 6.7 out of 10 on TMDB. Film critics gave it 5.9 out of 10 from 138 reviews, placing professional reception somewhat below the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • To reprise the role of Mama Firefly, actress Karen Black demanded a high fee, so director Rob Zombie preferred to cast Leslie Easterbrook in the role.
  • The Firefly family's house was also used in the pilot episode of the "Supernatural" project, which aired in 2005.
  • Shortly before filming began, Matthew McGorry injured his leg. A stunt double of matching height had to be urgently found for the scene at the beginning of the film where Kroha drags a corpse through the forest. The stunt double performed the scene up until the moment Kroha removes the bag from the head.
  • Playing the scene with the sheriff, in which her character cries, proved incredibly difficult for actress Sheri Moon Zombie. The filming took about three hours, but the actress was so emotionally exhausted that she took a two-day leave afterward.
  • The film used approximately 100 digital special effects, primarily for depicting blood and creating on-screen objects that come into contact with the human body (such as throat slitting, shots to the head or neck, and knife wounds). In cases where direct contact with the body was not required (for example, in scenes where a bullet hits a person through clothing), practical effects were used.
  • The Firefly family's house was recreated at Sable Ranch in Santa Clarita, California. The same building appears in many films from the 1990s.
  • The letters on the license plate of the blue van are AKU, which translates to 'evil' from Japanese.
