Copycat
Short description
Copycat is a crime thriller about Helen Hudson, a psychologist who specializes in serial killers and becomes the target of one of the men she has studied. The attack leaves her with agoraphobia, and she spends more than a year confined to her home. When a killer begins staging murders that imitate notorious real-life cases, a San Francisco detective, M.J. Monahan, seeks Helen's help. Despite her fear, Helen works with the police to interpret the pattern behind the crimes, though the killer stays a step ahead of the investigation.
Jon Amiel directed the film, his fourth feature after Busted, Tune in Tomorrow... and Sommersby. Ann Biderman and David Madsen wrote the screenplay, and Arnon Milchan, Mark Tarlov and Michael G. Nathanson produced it for Warner Bros. Pictures with Regency Enterprises and New Regency Pictures. Sigourney Weaver plays Helen Hudson, Holly Hunter plays M.J. Monahan, and Dermot Mulroney, William McNamara, Harry Connick Jr. and J.E. Freeman appear among the credited cast of 63.
Made for about 20 million dollars, the film took in roughly 32 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 85,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from about 1,350 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 58 reviews places it close to both audience scores.

- While preparing for the role, Harry Connick Jr. watched documentaries about serial killers.
- There is almost a 20 cm height difference between Holly Hunter and Sigourney Weaver. Because of this, throughout the film, in scenes involving both actresses, one of them is either sitting or standing in another part of the room.
- While gathering material for her role, Sigourney Weaver spent a long time talking with forensic psychiatrist Park Dietz, who, in turn, had spoken with a serial killer named Jeffrey Dahmer (1960-1994), who murdered 17 young men and boys between 1978 and 1991.
- As part of her preparation for the role, Holly Hunter spent her free time with detectives from the LAPD's homicide division.
- The film's music was later used in the thriller directed by Jim Gillespie, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (1997) starring Jennifer Love Hewitt.
- The scene in the women's restroom took 8 days to film.
- During the filming of the scene in the women's restroom, Sigourney Weaver genuinely spat in William McNamara's face. He was completely unprepared for this, as the rehearsals had been done without the spit. Therefore, the surprise and anger on his face are entirely genuine.
