Short description

Three childhood friends who have grown apart reunite for a road trip to Los Angeles. Lucy, Kit and Mimi were close as girls, but eight years later their lives have taken different directions. Lucy has a goal of her own in California, Kit has her own reasons for going, and Mimi hopes to take part in a singing competition. With little money and no real plan, the three set off in a convertible belonging to Ben, a friend of Mimi's. The journey tests them in ways they did not expect, and what begins as a trip toward individual ambitions becomes a chance for the friends to reconnect.

Crossroads was directed by Tamra Davis, released in 2002 as the sixth of the eight films she has directed, between Skipped Parts and the later documentary Larger than Life: Reign of the Boybands. Shonda Rhimes wrote the screenplay, and Ann Carli produced. Britney Spears plays Lucy, with Zoe Saldaña as Kit, Taryn Manning as Mimi and Anson Mount as Ben. Dan Aykroyd and Kim Cattrall appear as Lucy's parents. The credited cast runs to 33 names and the crew to 128.

Made for 12 million dollars, the film took about 61 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb and on TMDB, viewers rate it around the middle of the scale.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The photographs in Lucy's locket are actual photos of Britney Spears as a young girl.
  • Dan Aykroyd, who played Lucy's father, created a detailed backstory for his character and his naval service. Furthermore, one of his friends gave him a naval tattoo on his arm, which can be seen while he is working on the car in the garage.
  • The set of the series 'Scrubs' (2001) was borrowed for the filming of the hospital scene.
  • The song the girls dance to at the hotel in New Orleans is "Crazy Love" by the American duo Boomkat.
  • The rock band Bowling for Soup plays at the party at the beginning of the film; they are signed to the same record label as Britney Spears and have frequently opened for her during her concerts.
  • Ben's car, in which the friends embark on their journey, is a Buick Skylark convertible.
  • Britney Spears' character was given the surname Wagner in honor of casting director Kim Davis-Wagner.
  • Anson Mount was initially lukewarm about the offer to play the role of Ben, but he eventually agreed, largely due to the support of Robert De Niro, with whom he was working at the time on the thriller 'Analyze That' (2002). As it turned out, the famous actor was secretly a big fan of Britney Spears' music, and during breaks between takes, they rehearsed scenes from 'Crossroads' together. Anson Mount read his own lines, while Robert De Niro read Britney Spears'.
