Eddie Murphy Raw is a filmed version of Eddie Murphy's stand-up concert, recorded at the Felt Forum in Madison Square Garden in New York in 1987. The show follows a brief scripted opening set during Murphy's childhood, which shows his early interest in comedy, before Murphy takes the stage for a full performance. His routine deals mainly with relationships between men and women, along with the effects of his fame and observations about his family. The material is delivered in blunt, explicit language.
Robert Townsend directed the film, with Murphy writing the screenplay. It was Townsend's first feature as director, followed by Hollywood Shuffle the same year, and later The Meteor Man, Jackie's Back! and Up, Up, and Away. The cast includes Tatyana Ali, Billie Allen, Samuel L. Jackson, Deon Richmond and Barbara Harris in supporting roles, alongside Murphy as himself. Keenen Ivory Wayans and Robert D. Wachs produced.
The film took about 51 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for a concert picture. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from around 22,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.3 from some 387 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 24 reviews places it below the audience score, though still favorable overall.
