The Last Metro

Set in German-occupied Paris in 1942, The Last Metro centres on the Théâtre de Montmartre, which Marion Steiner now runs since her husband, a Jewish theatre director, has supposedly fled the city. In truth he is concealed in the building's cellar, and from there he follows the rehearsals of the company's new production through reports from Marion, who also plays the leading role. A young actor, Bernard Granger, joins the troupe, and Marion must balance the demands of the stage with keeping her husband hidden, maintaining the story of his escape, and dealing with a German admirer who takes a keen interest in the theatre.

François Truffaut directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Suzanne Schiffman, and produced the film. It is the thirteenth of the fourteen features he directed, arriving between Love on the Run (1979) and Confidentially Yours (1983). Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu lead a cast of thirty credited performers, among them Jean Poiret, Andréa Ferréol, Paulette Dubost and Jean-Louis Richard.

Released in September 1980, the film runs 131 minutes. Its ratings are closely aligned across audiences, standing at 7.3/10 on IMDb from around 17,000 votes and 7.2/10 on TMDB from roughly 535 votes, while a film critics' rating of 7.7/10 across 22 reviews places it slightly above both.
