Santa Fe Trail

Set in the years before the American Civil War, Santa Fe Trail follows Jeb Stuart and George Armstrong Custer, who are sent to the 2nd Cavalry at Fort Leavenworth after a fight with fellow cadets shortly before graduating from West Point. There they become involved in the military effort against the abolitionist John Brown, whose armed campaign has thrown the Kansas region into conflict. The story moves from the academy to the frontier and toward a confrontation with Brown's followers.

Michael Curtiz directed the film, the thirteenth of the twenty-five features he made, between The Sea Hawk and Virginia City. Robert Buckner wrote the screenplay, and Jack L. Warner produced it for Warner Bros. Pictures. Errol Flynn plays Jeb Stuart, Olivia de Havilland appears as Kit Carson Holliday, Raymond Massey plays John Brown, and Ronald Reagan plays George Custer, with Alan Hale and William Lundigan among a credited cast of seventy-nine. The production had a budget of one million dollars.

Released in December 1940, the film runs 110 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from around 4,600 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 5.8 from a much smaller number of votes.
