Short description

Kate and Luke work together at a Chicago brewery, where they spend their days drinking beer and flirting. They seem ideally suited to each other, but both are already in relationships: Luke is engaged to Jill, while Kate is seeing Chris, an older music producer. A weekend trip to Chris's beach house brings the four of them together, and the attraction between Kate and Luke becomes harder to ignore. The film follows their shifting friendships and romances as they weigh whether unexpected feelings are worth risking what they already have.

Drinking Buddies was released in 2013 and runs 90 minutes. Joe Swanberg directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced it with Alicia Van Couvering and Paul Bernon. It is his third film in the chronological list of his directing credits, following V/H/S and Stray Bullets, both from 2012. The cast includes Olivia Wilde as Kate, Jake Johnson as Luke, Anna Kendrick as Jill, Ron Livingston as Chris, Ti West as Dave and Jason Sudeikis as Gene Dentler.

The film received a critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 118 reviews, higher than its audience scores of 6.1 on IMDb from around 62,000 votes and 6 on TMDB from roughly 894 votes. That gap suggests critics responded more favorably than general viewers. The film is a comedy, drama and romance set in the United States, produced by MJW Films and Burn Later Productions.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was improvised from beginning to end. It had no script. The actors and crew had only a vague idea of the plot and the order in which events were supposed to unfold.
  • Olivia Wilde confirmed in several interviews that during filming, the actors drank real beer and strong alcoholic beverages because it turned out to be cheaper than using prop alcohol, where water is poured into liquor bottles.
  • In the scene where they play a game during a drinking bout, Anna Kendrick was genuinely drunk. This scene was filmed last that shooting day, so Kendrick and Jake Johnson decided not to hold back.
  • As the film had no script, the actors often arrived on set with no idea what they would be filming that day. Ron Livingston arrived in Chicago the day before his first appearance, but he received a call telling him that filming was ahead of schedule and that he was needed on set immediately – for the "breakup" scene with his girlfriend. Livingston only knew that his character had a relationship with Olivia Wilde’s character, as well as Anna Kendrick’s, so he immediately asked the director upon arriving on set with whom exactly he was breaking up and why.
