Short description

G.I. Joe: The Movie follows the American special-missions team G.I. Joe as it confronts a threat unlike any it has faced before. An ancient underground society of serpent people, Cobra-La, emerges to reclaim the surface world from those who banished it long ago, and it draws the ruthless Cobra organization into its plans. When Cobra-La's leader, Golobulus, orders Cobra Commander and his forces to seize a powerful new energy transmitter built by G.I. Joe, the team must stop a scheme that would replace the existing world with one of Cobra-La's own design, pitting the Joes against both their familiar enemy and a far older one.

The 1987 animated feature was directed by Don Jurwich from a screenplay by Ron Friedman, with Tom Griffin and Joe Bacal producing. It was made in the United States and Japan through Toei Animation, Hasbro, Marvel Productions and Sunbow Productions, and it grew out of the animated television series that had brought the toy line's characters to the screen. The voice cast is large, with 45 credited performers, among them Charlie Adler, Shuko Akune, Jack Angel, Michael Bell, Gregg Berger and Earl Boen. Jurwich had directed the earlier animated G.I. Joe series, so the film continues that television work rather than marking a departure from it.

The film runs 93 minutes and blends action, adventure, animation, family, fantasy and science fiction. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 6,400 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 122 votes. The two audience scores sit reasonably close together, though the far larger vote count on IMDb gives that rating more weight.
