The Battle of the River Plate

Set in the opening months of the Second World War, this British war drama follows the Royal Navy's efforts to protect Atlantic convoy routes that kept the British Isles supplied. German raiders, among them the pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee, hunted merchant shipping across the ocean, and the film centres on the campaign to track down and confront that vessel, culminating in the naval engagement off the South American coast known as the Battle of the River Plate.

The film was directed, written and produced by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, the partnership behind The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, A Matter of Life and Death, Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes and The Tales of Hoffmann. It was the sixth of the six features the pair directed together, with Powell later directing Peeping Tom. The cast includes John Gregson, Anthony Quayle, Ian Hunter, Jack Gwillim, Bernard Lee and Lionel Murton, among 41 credited performers, playing naval officers and merchant seamen caught up in the pursuit.

Released in October 1956 and running 119 minutes, the film drew moderate responses: it holds a rating of 6.6 from around 5,400 votes on IMDb and 6.4 from roughly 74 votes on TMDB, while a critics' score of 5.8 from 11 reviews sits below the audience figures. It is a British production from The Archers.
