Short description

Returning to their lord's castle, samurai warriors Washizu and Miki are waylaid by a spirit who predicts their futures. When the first part of the spirit's prophecy comes true, Washizu's scheming wife, Asaji, presses him to speed up the rest of the spirit's prophecy by murdering his lord and usurping his place. Director Akira Kurosawa's resetting of William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" in feudal Japan is one of his most acclaimed films.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Akira Kurosawa conceived of the film based on "Macbeth" as early as the late 1940s and planned to film it after the release of "Rashomon," however, Orson Welles' "Macbeth" was released in 1948, and Kurosawa decided to postpone production.
  • The scene of Wasizu's death was filmed with the participation of real archers who shot with bamboo mock arrows. Kurosawa believed this would elicit a genuine expression of fear on Toshiro Mifune's face.
