Dr. T.S. Clitterhouse is a respected Park Avenue physician who wants to understand what makes a criminal. He settles on an unusual method: committing crimes himself and recording his own physical reactions as he goes. Burgling the homes of people he knows only takes him so far, so he seeks out professional thieves and joins their gang of jewel robbers, studying them at close range while steadily taking charge of the operation. The gang's leader, Rocks Valentine, resents being pushed aside, and the doctor's double life grows harder to manage as the police close in.
Edward G. Robinson plays the title role, with Claire Trevor as Jo Keller and Humphrey Bogart as Rocks Valentine, supported by Allen Jenkins, Donald Crisp and Gale Page among a credited cast of 59. Anatole Litvak directed from a screenplay by John Huston and John Wexley, with Litvak and Robert Lord among the producers. It was the first of Litvak's two 1938 releases, followed by a run of films that includes All This, and Heaven Too, Sorry, Wrong Number and Anastasia.
Warner Bros. Pictures and First National Pictures released the crime drama in July 1938, and it runs 87 minutes. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from 61 votes, a modest sample that indicates a small but appreciative audience.
