Short description
Three years after his encounters with a vampire living next door, Charley Brewster has been through therapy and now believes the whole affair was really the work of a serial killer. His friend Peter Vincent, a television horror host, is not so sure. When Regine Dandrige, an actress, and her followers move into the building where Peter lives, Charley is drawn toward her, and he comes to suspect that she is a vampire. Neither his girlfriend Alex nor Peter takes his warnings seriously, and the terror he thought he had put behind him returns.
Tommy Lee Wallace directed the film, his second feature after Halloween III: Season of the Witch and well before Vampires: Los Muertos. He wrote the screenplay with Miguel Tejada-Flores and Tim Metcalfe, and the producers included Mort Engelberg, Herb Jaffe and Tejada-Flores. William Ragsdale and Roddy McDowall return as Charley and Peter, joined by Traci Lind as Alex, Julie Carmen as Regine, Jon Gries as Louie and Russell Clark as Belle, among a credited cast of thirty.
The sequel was released in April 1988 and took in about 3 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from nearly 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from 468 votes. A critics' rating of 4.8 from eleven reviews places it below the audience scores, which suggests viewers have been somewhat more forgiving of it than reviewers were.
What's left behind the scenes
- The beam of the flashlight Peter shone into the elevator shaft was animated.
- After getting the role of Richie, Merritt Butrick (1959-1989) discovered he had AIDS, which at the time was equivalent to a death sentence. Butrick did not hide this from his colleagues on set. Very little was known about the transmission of the disease at that time, but some precautions were taken (everyone made sure the vampires' fangs didn't puncture the actors' skin).
- In 1988, the film was adapted into a graphic novel. It was not part of the 'Night of Terror' series being published at the time.
- For the scene of his own death, Brian Thompson wore a bag of worms on his stomach, and to prevent them from crawling out, he was forced to remain in a semi-bent position.
- The role of the vampire Belle was played by the famous choreographer Russell Clark. His duties included not only performing the dance with Julie Carmen (which was preceded by exhausting 8-hour rehearsals), but also directing the other actors playing vampires.
- Josh Richman auditioned for the role of the werewolf Louis, but ended up playing Fritz.
- Shortly after filming wrapped, the lead actor, Roddy McDowall, and director Tommy Lee Wallace were scheduled to meet with Jose Menendez, the chairman of Live Entertainment, to discuss a potential threequel, but that very evening, after the negotiations, Menendez and his wife were murdered by their own sons. This tragedy not only put an end to any continuation but also severely limited the film's distribution, which was quickly rushed to video stores. Due to the cancellation of all advertising, many viewers only learned of its existence after the cassette release.
- The character Boz was based on Brian Bosworth, a former professional American football player. Brian Thompson was cast in the role due to his physical resemblance to the athlete.
