Tremors

In the Nevada desert, the small town of Perfection has a problem beneath its surface. Valentine McKee and Earl Bassett, two handymen who had planned to move on, find the roads out of town impassable and the ground shaking without explanation. With the help of Rhonda LeBeck, a seismology student working in the area, they come to understand that giant carnivorous worms are moving through the soil under the town and attacking anything that stirs. Cut off from the outside, the residents have to figure out how to survive creatures they cannot see coming, while Burt and Heather Gummer, among the better-armed locals, take a different approach to the threat.

Ron Underwood directed the film from a screenplay by Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson, who also produced. It was Underwood's feature debut and the first entry in what became a series. Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross, Reba McEntire and Victor Wong lead the cast.

Released in January 1990, the film cost about 11 million dollars and took in roughly 49 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 165,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from a few thousand votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 53 reviews places it in line with how audiences have received it, and the large vote counts suggest an enduring following rather than a passing one.
