The Sentinel

Alison Parker, a successful fashion model in New York, is haunted by memories of a suicide attempt in her youth. Wanting space of her own, she rents an apartment in a Brooklyn Heights building despite her boyfriend Michael's wish that they marry. The building's residents are eccentric, and Alison is soon troubled by sleeplessness, hallucinations and disturbing dreams. When she complains about noise from the other tenants, she learns that she and a blind priest are the only people living there. With Michael, she begins looking into the building and why she was drawn to it.

The film is a horror mystery directed by Michael Winner, the eighth of the thirteen features he made, following Death Wish and preceding Death Wish II. Winner wrote the screenplay with Jeffrey Konvitz, and both also produced. Cristina Raines plays Alison, with Chris Sarandon as Michael, Ava Gardner as the landlady Helen Logan, and Martin Balsam, John Carradine and José Ferrer among a credited cast of thirty. It runs 92 minutes and was released by Universal Pictures in January 1977.

On IMDb it holds a 5.8 rating from twenty critics' reviews, while on TMDB its 6.1 rating rests on a much larger body of 237 votes, suggesting a modest, steady following rather than wide acclaim.
