Dr. Anton Phibes returns from a long period of suspended animation and sets out for Egypt, accompanied by the body of his dead wife, Victoria. He is searching for an ancient source said to restore life, hoping to bring her back. His path crosses that of Darius Biederbeck, who seeks the same prize for his own reasons, and the two men become rivals. Phibes, assisted by his silent companion Vulnavia, deals with anyone who stands in his way.
The film is a British horror comedy directed by Robert Fuest, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Robert Blees. It followed Fuest's earlier films And Soon the Darkness and The Abominable Dr. Phibes, and it continues the story of the title character. Vincent Price again plays Phibes, with Robert Quarry as Darius Biederbeck, Valli Kemp as Vulnavia, Peter Cushing as a ship's captain, Beryl Reid as Miss Ambrose and Terry-Thomas as Lombardo. Louis M. Heyward produced.
Released in 1972, the film runs 89 minutes. It holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 on IMDb from around 7,800 votes, and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6.4 out of 10 from 22 reviews. The figures point to a modest but steady following rather than broad acclaim, with critics and general audiences responding in similar measure.
