John Reilly, his wife Susan and their blind daughter Rebecca travel to Italy to claim an inherited castle. After a car accident that killed the couple's young son, the family is strained, and the move is meant to be a fresh start. Instead, Rebecca senses a presence in the old building, and strange noises and events unsettle the household. The castle's previous owner, a duchess, kept a deformed son hidden away in its lower levels, and that creature is now free to roam. The family's attempts to leave are not straightforward, and the horror escalates.
Stuart Gordon directed the film from a screenplay by Dennis Paoli, with Maurizio Maggi producing. It followed Gordon's earlier genre work Re-Animator, From Beyond, Dolls and Fortress, and preceded Space Truckers later the same year. Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton star as the Reillys, with Jonathan Fuller as Giorgio, Jessica Dollarhide as Rebecca, Massimo Sarchielli as Giannetti and Elisabeth Kaza as Agnese.
Released in 1996 and running 90 minutes, the film is a horror mystery with dramatic and thriller elements, made by Full Moon Entertainment in the United States. On IMDb it holds 5.9/10 from around 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1/10 from roughly 247 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.5/10 from nine reviews places it close to the audience scores.
