Godzilla vs. Biollante
Short description
Godzilla vs. Biollante picks up after Godzilla's previous rampage through Japan. The monster's scattered cells become the object of an international contest, with foreign agents and the Japanese government all seeking to obtain them. Fearing Godzilla may return, officials use the cells in a biological weapon and bring in the geneticist Genshiro Shiragami to carry out the research. Shiragami's work takes a different direction, producing a new organism, Biollante, while Godzilla himself is stirred back into action, setting up a confrontation between the two creatures.
The film was directed and written by Kazuki Ōmori and produced by Shogo Tomiyama for Toho Pictures. It is the earliest of the four films Ōmori directed listed here, preceding Afternoon When Flowers Fell, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and June Bride. The cast includes Kunihiko Mitamura, Yoshiko Tanaka, Masanobu Takashima, Kōji Takahashi, Tōru Minegishi and Megumi Odaka, with 41 credited performers in all.
Made on a budget of about five million dollars, the film took roughly seven million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 8,200 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.4 out of 10 from 315 votes, a stronger showing from that smaller group. A critics' rating of 5.7 out of 10 from 12 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Shiragami was supposed to create Duetillios – a hybrid of a rat and a fish – which Godzilla would quickly defeat. This was replaced with a battle against Super X 2 and Biollante. Scenes of the monster's transformation and its connection to Erika were also added. Various script drafts also featured several alternative endings – Biollante could have died, or killed Godzilla.

- A scene from the film appears in "Mars Attacks!" (1996).
- This is the seventeenth film about Godzilla and the first to feature Biollante.
- After the film's release in Japan, the Toho film company screened it in Hong Kong, dubbed in English. This international version of the film was released in the United States in 1992.
- An unofficial title for the film is "Godzilla vs. Rosdon."
- Biollante appeared on screen only once after her first appearance – in a short scene in the film "Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla" (1994), she also appears in the games Super Godzilla (1993) and Godzilla: Monster War (1994).
- Actress Megumi Odaka later starred in all subsequent films of the "Heisei era" (1984–1998) about Godzilla.
