Swing Shift

Set during the Second World War, Swing Shift follows Kay Walsh, whose husband Jack enlists after the attack on Pearl Harbor. With him away, Kay takes a job at an aircraft plant, contrary to his wishes. There she befriends Hazel, a singer from across the way, and the two become close as they grow skilled at factory work. Kay also meets her foreman, Lucky Lockhart, and their relationship complicates her life as the war continues and Jack remains overseas.

Jonathan Demme directed the film, the fifth of fourteen features he made in chronological order, arriving between Stop Making Sense and Something Wild. Nancy Dowd wrote the screenplay, Jerry Bick produced, and Goldie Hawn stars as Kay, with Kurt Russell as Lucky, Christine Lahti as Hazel, Fred Ward, Ed Harris and Sudie Bond among the credited cast of sixty-six.

Released in April 1984, the film earned about seven million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from roughly 5,900 votes, while on TMDB its average is 5.6 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from fifteen reviews places it higher than either audience score.
