Adam Resurrected follows Adam Stein, a Jewish former cabaret and circus performer whose talents as a magician, musician and clown once made him a star in Weimar-era Berlin. After the war he is placed in an Israeli institute for survivors of the Holocaust, where he draws staff into his own turmoil. There he encounters a boy who behaves like a dog, echoing Adam's own survival in a camp, where the commandant Klein kept him alive and made him live as the man's dog while his wife and daughter were sent to their deaths. Klein's reappearance in Adam's life, and the boy's plight, drive the film's central conflict.
Paul Schrader directs from a screenplay by Noah Stollman, adapting Yoram Kaniuk's novel. It is the fourteenth of the twenty-three films Schrader has directed, arriving between Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist and The Canyons. Jeff Goldblum plays Adam, with Willem Dafoe as Commandant Klein and Derek Jacobi as Dr. Nathan Gross, alongside Ayelet Zurer, Hana Laslo and Joachim Król in a credited cast of twenty-seven.
Made for about ten million dollars and shot in Germany, Israel and the United States, the film drew limited commercial attention. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from roughly 4,700 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 from about a hundred. A critics' rating of 5.2 from thirty-eight reviews places it below the audience scores.
