Rose Marie

In the Canadian wilderness, an orphan named Rose Marie Lemaitre has grown up without the comforts of settled life. When Mike Malone, an officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, finds her, he takes her under his protection and arranges for her to learn the manners expected of a young woman. The two develop feelings for each other, but Rose Marie's heart is also drawn to James Duval, a trapper she meets after leaving the woods. The situation grows more complicated when Black Eagle, a Native chief who is Duval's rival, is found murdered.

This 1954 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production is a musical comedy adapted from the 1924 Broadway operetta by Rudolf Friml and Oscar Hammerstein, which had already been filmed twice before. Mervyn LeRoy directed; it was the eleventh of the fourteen films he directed in chronological order, coming between Quo Vadis (1951) and Mister Roberts (1955). Ann Blyth plays Rose Marie, with Howard Keel as Malone, Fernando Lamas as Duval, and supporting turns from Bert Lahr, Marjorie Main and Joan Taylor. The screenplay was written by Ronald Millar, George Froeschel and Otto A. Harbach.

Running just under two hours, the film holds a modest 5.8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 595 votes, a mixed response that suggests the material did not fully carry over from stage to screen for viewers.
