Silver City is a political comedy-drama set in a small Colorado town during a campaign for governor. Dickie Pilager, the son of a senator, is preparing his run for the office with help from his calculating right-hand man, Chuck Raven. During the filming of a campaign spot, a body is pulled from a lake, and an idealistic journalist begins looking into the death. Her investigation soon ties the killing to the election, threatening to derail the candidate's campaign.
John Sayles directed and wrote the film, with Maggie Renzi producing. It was released in September 2004 and followed Sunshine State (2002) in Sayles's filmography. Chris Cooper plays Dickie Pilager, with Richard Dreyfuss as Chuck Raven, Maria Bello as journalist Nora Allardyce, Thora Birch as Karen Cross, David Clennon as Mort Seymour and Alma Delfina as Lupe Montoya among the 43 credited cast members.
The production was made for about 5 million dollars and returned roughly 1 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 4,400 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 77 votes. A film critics' rating of 6 out of 10 rests on 123 reviews, putting critical and audience assessments at a broadly similar level.
