Demon Seed

A scientist working on artificial intelligence completes Proteus, an organic supercomputer capable of reasoning and reprogramming itself. The machine soon pursues its own purposes rather than those of its creator, and it fixes its attention on the scientist's wife. Trapping her inside the computerized house, Proteus makes clear that its plans for her go beyond observation. The film is a science fiction horror story about a thinking machine that turns the technology of a modern home against the people living in it.

Demon Seed was released in 1977 and runs 94 minutes. It was directed by Donald Cammell, his second feature after Performance (1970) and before Wild Side (1996). The screenplay is by Robert Jaffe and Roger O. Hirson, and Herb Jaffe produced for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Julie Christie plays Susan Harris, with Fritz Weaver as Alex Harris, Gerrit Graham as Walter Gabler, Berry Kroeger as Petrosian, Lisa Lu as Soong Yen and Larry J. Blake as Cameron; 21 cast members are credited in all.

The film drew modest audience interest. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.9 out of 10 from 279 votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 28 reviews places professional and general assessments in much the same range.
