Frank Carveth is worried about his young daughter, Candice, who has been spending weekends at the institute where her mother, Nola, is being treated. The clinic is run by Dr. Hal Raglan, a psychiatrist whose unconventional methods involve having patients act out their feelings of rage in front of an audience. When Frank finds marks on the girl's body, he takes her to her grandmother, and the visit ends with a violent death and the child found asleep with no memory of what happened. Frank begins looking into Raglan's practice and what has become of Nola, whose treatment has produced results far beyond what the doctor intended.
David Cronenberg wrote and directed the film, his fourth feature made in Canada. Oliver Reed plays Raglan, Samantha Eggar plays Nola and Art Hindle plays Frank, with Henry Beckman, Nuala Fitzgerald and Cindy Hinds among the credited cast of twenty.
Made for about a million dollars, the film took roughly five million worldwide, a strong return for a modest production. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from more than thirty-three thousand votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from over eight hundred votes, while a critics' score of 7.4 from thirty-one reviews places it somewhat higher than either audience figure. It came between Rabid and Scanners in Cronenberg's filmography.
