Cinderfella is a comic reworking of the Cinderella story centred on a young man left at the mercy of his father's widow and her two sons after his father dies. While he works for the household, the stepbrothers search the estate for treasure their late father is rumoured to have hidden there. To restore the family's fading fortunes, the stepmother stages an elaborate ball in honour of a visiting princess, hoping to match her with one of her sons. The young man's Fairy Godfather then appears and sets about transforming him into a suitor who might win the princess for himself.
The film was directed by Frank Tashlin, who also wrote the screenplay, with Jerry Lewis producing and starring in the title role. Tashlin's filmography places it between The Girl Can't Help It and The Alphabet Murders. Ed Wynn plays the Fairy Godfather, Judith Anderson the stepmother, Henry Silva and Robert Hutton her sons, and Anna Maria Alberghetti the princess.
Paramount released the comedy, fantasy and musical in the United States in December 1960, and it runs 88 minutes. Made for about 3 million dollars, it returned roughly 5 million worldwide. Audience ratings are moderate and based on limited sampling: on IMDb it sits at 5.9 from around 4,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from 119 votes.
