In Good Company

Dan Foreman is a veteran advertising salesman at Sports America, a magazine where he has spent years building a team and a reputation. A corporate takeover upends that, and he finds himself reporting to Carter Duryea, a much younger man with little feel for the publishing business but the backing of the new management. Carter's cost-cutting instincts and his inexperience put him at odds with Dan, who also learns that his wife is expecting another child while his daughter Alex is heading off to university, adding financial pressure to an already strained situation. The tension between the two men becomes personal when Carter and Alex begin seeing each other.

Paul Weitz directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced with Chris Weitz. The film is the fourth of thirteen features Weitz directed, following About a Boy and preceding American Dreamz. Dennis Quaid plays Dan, Topher Grace plays Carter, and Scarlett Johansson plays Alex, with Marg Helgenberger, David Paymer and Clark Gregg among a credited cast of fifty-five. Released at the end of 2004, it is a comedy-drama with romantic elements set in the American magazine industry.

On IMDb the film holds 6.5 out of 10 from over fifty-six thousand votes, while on TMDB it has 6.1 out of 10 from a much smaller group of just over seven hundred. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 171 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores. It took in about 61 million dollars worldwide.
