Short description
Breaker! Breaker! follows truck driver John David Dawes, known as J.D., who sends his younger brother Billy on a delivery run. When Billy disappears, J.D. traces him to a small California town called Texas City, where a corrupt judge named Trimmings rules through a private police force that preys on outsiders and seizes their cargo. J.D. heads there to find his brother and runs into the town's hostility head-on.
The film was directed by Don Hulette, who also produced it, from a screenplay by Terry Chambers. Chuck Norris plays J.D., with George Murdock as Judge Trimmings, Terry O'Connor as Arlene Trimmings, Don Gentry as Sgt. Strode, John Di Fusco as Arney and Ron Cedillos as Deputy Bowles. Released in April 1977, it runs 86 minutes and blends action, adventure, crime and thriller elements, drawing on the trucking culture of the period as well as the martial arts skills of its lead.
The film grossed about 12 million dollars worldwide against a modest production. Audiences rate it 4.4 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 4,100 votes, and it holds 5 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of 96 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- A promotional trailer for the film was shot before principal photography began, in the hope that it would help secure funding for the project.
- When the character played by Chuck Norris is spotted by a helicopter, he takes off running and jumps over the hood of a green car. A few seconds earlier, that same car was 5-10 meters behind Norris. This can be determined by the position of a yellow Pontiac LeMans.
- It is implied that the same helicopter appears throughout the scene; however, its livery varies from red-and-white to red and then to yellow.
