The Beyond
Short description
Liza Merril, a New Yorker, inherits an old hotel in Louisiana and puts her savings into restoring it for reopening. What she does not know is that the building stands on one of the entrances to Hell, and that a painter was killed there decades earlier, in 1927, after being accused of devil worship. Strange and violent incidents multiply as the renovation proceeds, and Liza, with the help of a local doctor, John McCabe, tries to understand what is happening around her.
Lucio Fulci directed and co-wrote the film with Dardano Sacchetti and Giorgio Mariuzzo, and Fabrizio De Angelis produced it. It was Fulci's thirteenth film as director, following City of the Living Dead and preceding The House by the Cemetery. Catriona MacColl plays Liza, with David Warbeck as McCabe, Cinzia Monreale as Emily, Antoine Saint-John as Schweick, and Veronica Lazăr and Larry Ray in supporting roles.
Released in 1981 and running 88 minutes, the Italian horror film holds a 6.6 rating on IMDb from nearly 25,000 votes and a 6.9 on TMDB, with a critics' rating of 6.4 from 22 reviews. Critics and audiences therefore land fairly close together, and the larger vote count on IMDb relative to TMDB points to a wider, more long-standing viewership there.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to Fulci, actor David Warbeck, who played one of the main roles in the film, was only fit for filming in cheap horror movies, but he physically resembled Jack Nicholson, which could help with the film's distribution.
