Saving Face

Wilhelmina Pang is a Chinese-American surgeon living in Manhattan, balancing a demanding medical career against the expectations of her family in Flushing, Queens. Her mother, a widow, has no idea that her daughter is gay, and she keeps trying to arrange suitable matches for her. Wil keeps her relationship with Vivian, an openly lesbian dancer, away from her mother, and Vivian finds Wil's reluctance to be seen with her difficult to accept. The situation grows more complicated when Wil's mother becomes pregnant and, cast out by her own father, moves in with her daughter.

Alice Wu wrote and directed the film, her first feature; her second, The Half of It, followed in 2020. Joan Chen plays the mother, with Michelle Krusiec as Wil, Lynn Chen as Vivian, and Ato Essandoh among the supporting cast. Will Smith is credited as a producer.

Made for about 3 million dollars, the film earned roughly 1 million at the worldwide box office, a modest return relative to its cost. Audiences have rated it well: it holds a 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb from over thirteen thousand votes and a 7.2 out of 10 on TMDB. A critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from ninety reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
