Born in East L.A.

Rudy Robles is a third-generation American of Mexican descent who works as a mechanic and has never learned Spanish. When he stops by a factory to pick up his cousin, an immigration raid sweeps up everyone present, and because he left his identification at home, Rudy is detained and deported to Mexico without money or papers. Stranded south of the border and unable to make himself understood, he tries repeatedly to cross back into the United States, taking whatever work he can find to raise the money for a smuggler.
