The Quiet Ones follows a university professor who uses unorthodox and controversial methods in his research. Working with his best students, he sets out to test a theory that paranormal activity is produced by negative human energy, and the group conducts a series of experiments on a young patient, pushing her toward the edge of madness. The project is meant to prove something about the mind rather than to help the subject, and once the experiments begin, disturbing events follow that the participants cannot control or explain.
The film is set in 1974 and was directed by John Pogue, the second of four features he has directed, after Quarantine 2: Terminal and before Deep Blue Sea 3 and Eraser: Reborn. Craig Rosenberg, Oren Moverman and Pogue wrote the screenplay, and Hammer Film Productions was among the production companies behind it. Jared Harris plays Professor Coupland, with Olivia Cooke as Jane Harper, Sam Claflin as Brian McNeil, Erin Richards, Rory Fleck-Byrne and Laurie Paul Calvert in supporting roles.
Released in April 2014, the British-American horror film runs 98 minutes and took in about 18 million dollars worldwide. Audience scores are modest and closely matched, with a rating of 5.1 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 22,000 votes and 5.1 out of 10 on TMDB from far fewer voters.
