Short description

Two scientists, Albert and Maksymilian, agree to take part in a hibernation experiment, expecting to be woken after three years. Instead they sleep for decades, and when they are revived they find a world transformed by war. The surface of the Earth has been left irradiated and uninhabitable, and the survivors live in an underground society made up entirely of women, who reproduce without men. Albert and Maksymilian appear to be the only men left alive, which makes them objects of intense curiosity and control in a state ruled by women.

The film is a Polish science-fiction comedy directed by Juliusz Machulski, who also wrote the screenplay. It was his first feature, and he returned to science-fiction comedy in King Size in 1988, before directing Vinci 2 in 2025. The two leads are played by Olgierd Łukaszewicz as Albert Starski and Jerzy Stuhr as Maksymilian Paradys, with Bożena Stryjkówna as Lamia, Bogusława Pawelec as Emma Dax, Hanna Stankówna as Tekla and Beata Tyszkiewicz as Berna. Thirty-three cast members are credited in total.

Sexmission runs 117 minutes and mixes adventure and comedy with its science-fiction premise. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.2 out of 10 based on 344 votes, indicating a solidly positive response from viewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • It ranks 87th in attendance among foreign films in Soviet cinema distribution.
  • At the beginning of the film, while greeting 'all hibernation fans around the world,' Max raises two fingers. This gesture was suggested by censors; according to the director's original plan, Max was supposed to show the greeting sign used by members of 'Solidarity'.
  • In Soviet cinemas, the film was released in a censored version titled 'New Amazons'.
  • In the newspaper found by Max and Albert in the boots, only the headlines are in Polish. The articles themselves are in French.
  • The film was released in Soviet cinemas for audiences 'under 16' and with 'cuts'. Legends circulated among Soviet viewers about which shockingly explicit sexual episodes had been removed from the film. In reality, however, the majority of the excised material consisted of the scene where the 'decadents' camp is ransacked. As for the explicit scenes, only a couple of harmless shots of frontal nudity were cut from the film.
