Short description
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider follows the aristocratic archaeologist Lara Croft, who discovers that her late father left behind an ancient clock holding a coded message. It points to a legendary artifact tied to time and space, split into pieces long ago and hidden away. A rare planetary alignment, occurring only once every five thousand years, will allow the artifact to reach its full power, and a secret society known as the Illuminati is hunting the pieces for itself. Lara must recover them first, working alongside or against rival adventurers as the deadline closes in.
The film is based on the Tomb Raider video game series and was directed by Simon West, the third of fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, following The General's Daughter and preceding When a Stranger Calls. Angelina Jolie stars as Lara, with Iain Glen, Daniel Craig, Noah Taylor, Chris Barrie and Jon Voight in supporting roles. Patrick Massett and John Zinman wrote the screenplay, and Colin Wilson, Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin produced.
Released in June 2001, the film had a budget of 115 million dollars and took about 275 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from roughly 230,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 out of 10 from around 6,677 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 4.6 out of 10 from 163 reviews, lower than the audience scores.

- Lara's father, Lord Croft, was originally named Henshingly, but was changed to Richard in later games.
- Part of the film was shot in Angkor, Cambodia.
- The Buddhist ceremony in which Lara participates (following the phone call scene with Powell from Cambodia) is shown authentically and is not staged.
- The success of the Lara Croft film prompted Land Rover to release a special edition of 250 Defender Tomb Raider LE vehicles. All of them, both externally and internally, were identical to the car driven by Angelina Jolie in the film.
- Scenes from the film set in Siberia were actually filmed in Iceland.
- The film is based on the "Tomb Raider" series of computer games (1996 – present).
- In 1998, Brent V. Friedman wrote a screenplay for "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" that was never produced. One possible reason was the massive box office failure of "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" (1997) the previous year, for which Friedman was one of the screenwriters.
- Lara's mansion is "Hatfield House", a vast estate in Hertfordshire, England.
- For realism, the actors in the film speak with accents not native to them: American Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft) with an English accent, Englishman Daniel Craig (Alex West) with an American accent, and Ian Glen (Manfred Powell), a Scotsman, with an English accent.
- A music video for U2's hit "Elevation" from the film's soundtrack was later filmed with a "Tomb Raider" theme, and the musicians even wanted to invite Angelina Jolie to star in it.
- Although the film does not specify the year, the actual planetary alignment occurred on May 3, 2000, approximately a year before the film's release. In the film, the "conjunction" begins on May 15th.
