Short description

Rynn Jacobs is thirteen and lives with her father in a rented house on the New England coast. She seems remarkably self-reliant for her age, and she tells anyone who asks that her father is away or busy. The landlady, Cora Hallet, grows suspicious, and her son Frank proves far more persistent and menacing, refusing to leave Rynn alone. Rynn finds an ally in Mario Podesta, a young neighbor, as she works to keep the truth about her household from the people pressing in on it.

The film is a Canada-France co-production directed by Nicolas Gessner, with a screenplay by Laird Koenig adapting his own novel. Jodie Foster plays Rynn, Martin Sheen and Alexis Smith play the Hallets, Scott Jacoby plays Mario and Mort Shuman appears as Officer Miglioriti. It runs 91 minutes and was released at the end of 1976.

On TMDB the film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 370 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 7.3 out of 10 from 15 reviews, so the two measures sit close together. Its place in Gessner's filmography follows the features he directed through the early 1970s, and it remains one of the titles most associated with Foster's early career.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Jodie Foster was 14 years old during filming and refused to shoot nude scenes. Therefore, a body double – Jodie’s older sister, Connie Foster – was used in the scene with the undressed Rinn. Nevertheless, Jodie Foster was very upset, she cried and screamed, calling 'those who came up with this' 'crazy,' and demanded the director remove the scene from the film, as all viewers would think it was actually her, and that it was her body.
