Gino Monetti is an Italian immigrant who built a bank in New York through ruthless dealings, and his four grown sons have grown up in the shadow of his authority. When his questionable business practices catch up with him, three of the brothers refuse to help him avoid prison, take control of the bank and push their father aside. Only Max, a lawyer, stays loyal to him, and his decision sets him against the rest of the family.
The film is a crime drama directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, released by 20th Century Fox in 1949 and running 101 minutes. It was his third feature as director, following The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and preceding All About Eve. Philip Yordan wrote the screenplay and Sol C. Siegel produced. Edward G. Robinson plays Gino, with Richard Conte as Max and Susan Hayward as Irene Bennett; Luther Adler, Paul Valentine and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. appear as the other brothers. Twenty-eight cast members are credited.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.3 from roughly 4,600 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 7 from about 91 votes. The larger IMDb sample and the smaller TMDB one point to a modest but durable reputation rather than a widely seen title. Mankiewicz went on to make All About Eve the following year.
